• A Metaphor Moment

Metaphors can be powerful ways to ponder a new perspective or make a deeper discovery for yourself.  Based on what is happening in your life, some metaphors may resonate with you and some may not. Take a minute to review this month’s Metaphor Moment below and see what shows up for you!

  • Cascading Waters

The stream begins with a trickle. It timidly seeks out the path of least resistance, slowly progressing forward. The momentum builds as additional tributaries join the journey. The trickle becomes a stream. Once barely audible, the flow resonates with rippling sounds as it finds its rhythm over the rocks. It washes easily over boulders that at one time would have been barriers. It claims its path and plunges forward, cascading with powerful, purposeful flow.

As you consider your life in terms of the imagery described, here are some Questions to Ponder.

Pick the ones that "land" for you and release the rest.

    • What are the cascading waters that you desire for your life?

    • Where are you in the process? A tiny trickle slowing finding its path, or a flow starting to resonate?

    • Where are you out of rhythm?

    • What are the boulders in your way?

    • What does it look like to claim your path?

Take the time to listen to yourself. There is wisdom within you that is waiting to be heard.

Coaching

You can soar like an eagle!

But first you have to get out of the nest. The day comes for all eaglets when they are pushed out of the nest…nudged forward to realize their potential, spread their wings and fly.

Imagine the freedom and exhilaration when they do!

"We can learn to soar only in direct proportion to our determination to rise above the doubt and transcend the limitations."   - David McNally

Coaching may be the nudge you need to transcend the limitations.

Coaching Works! It's a powerful partnership that can be the catalyst for significant change within individuals, relationships and teams.

Personal Life Coaching:

How well are the parts of your life coming together? When you consider the "whole" of your life and all of its overlapping aspects, what does the picture look like to you? Where is it rich and vibrant and where does it seem somewhat flat or dim?
What's getting in the way of the color?

Coaching is a trusting, confidential and powerful partnership designed to help you be more of who you want to be in all areas of your life.

The coaching process may include:

  • Rediscovering yourself: What's important to you? What are your natural gifts and strengths? What's inside the gift of you?
  • Recognizing where you are stuck and facilitating movement
  • Articulating your dreams and goals
  • Identifying strategies and plans
  • Courageously creating change
  • Finding fulfillment, even in life's current circumstances

You choose the direction of discovery. During each meeting, the client brings the topic of choice. The coach listens intently, poses powerful questions and shares observations in order to deepen the client's
learning and forward action.
You have the answers. Coaching helps you remove the barriers in order to access them.

Relationship Systems Coaching:

Life consists of relationships: work relationships, business partnerships, siblings, parent-child relationships, spouses, romantic relationships, and so on.

Just as the varying aspects in our individual lives overlap and are connected as parts of the whole, we are constantly in relationship and our lives overlap with others, connecting us to part of a bigger system.

Relationship Systems Coaching focuses on the bigger system of the relationship. It helps take the emphasis away from what the individuals within the relationship are or aren't doing to and for each other, and places the focus on what is trying to happen within the relationship itself.

As a Relationship Systems Coach, the interaction occurs with the individuals in the relationship; however, the relationship is held as the client. The coach's job is to unveil and reveal what's taking place within the system of the relationship rather than within the individuals. This minimizes defensiveness and blame and enrolls the individuals as agents of change for the relationship.

Relationship Systems Coaching gives individuals tools to use to design their alliance and discover who they want to be in relationship, in order to minimize conflicts, overcome disputes or simply take a good relationship to great.

Team Coaching (Organization Systems Coaching):

"We are created, not for isolation, but for relationships. At heart, we are not a thousand points of separated light, but rather, part of a larger brightness. Within organizations, caring and committed relationships are not a luxury. They are a necessity."  - D. Johnson and F. Johnson

Team Coaching through an Organization Systems approach focuses on the team as a whole rather than on the individuals.

A great team is symbolic of a great relationship, so the principles of relationship coaching as described above apply to teams as well. It is just inclusive of a larger system.

Although the coaching interaction occurs with ALL of the individuals on the team collectively, the system of the team relationship is held as the client.

Again, the coach's job is to unveil and reveal what's taking place within the system of the relationship rather than within the individuals. This minimizes defensiveness and blame and enrolls the individuals as agents of change for the relationship, being the team.

To use the terms from the quote above, when a system is coached into focusing on the "larger brightness" and not the "points of separated light", they engage in relationship and not isolation, and the team members do not look for fault; they look for how they can use their strengths and weaknesses to create an outstanding team environment. There is an increase in the individuals' capacity to make conscious and intentional decisions about how to "be" in the team and gain new insights and tools to use to create positive and productive action.

How "bright" is your team? Is it time to coach the system?
